What is Mobbing and Does It Only Occur Among Adults?

What is mobbing and does it only occur among adults?

Mobbing is a phenomenon that has been present in cultures worldwide since the dawn of time. It always involves exploiting one's advantage over those perceived as weaker - whether socially, economically, professionally, intellectually, physically, or emotionally.
In practice, this means that person A feels superior to person B in some aspect: "I am wealthier", "I am smarter", "I am older", or "more experienced".

Mobbing in the Past - In Tribes and History

Even in the oldest cultures, behaviors resembling mobbing could be observed.
An elder shaman would decide the fate of the tribe, even if his decisions undermined the well-being and dignity of others.
In some tribes, young boys had to stand for hours in the sun, fending off insects from their leader. When they were too slow - they were punished. This is an example of power based on dominance and a lack of respect.

Mobbing in the Modern World

Similar mechanisms could also be observed in the 20th century.
Henry Ford - a symbol of success and efficiency - is said to have demanded work beyond endurance from his employees, often without breaks for meals or rest. Today, he is admired, but the human cost of such an approach is rarely mentioned.

This shows that we often turn a blind eye to mobbing if the perpetrator is someone famous, influential, or widely respected. An unwritten belief has even taken hold that a person in a higher position "can do more".

Where Does the Tolerance for Mobbing Come From?

The sources of such thinking trace back to biology and history. We have always needed a leader - a strong, decisive figure who protects the group. It was the leader who decided who should be listened to. Over time, the role of leaders evolved, but the feeling that the stronger party is allowed more has remained.

In the 20th century, this was further reinforced by popular ideas of success:
"Strong leaders know best",
"Winners don't have to explain themselves".

As a result, psychological violence or abuse could be justified in the name of a "higher goal".

Mobbing - Not Only at Work

Although most commonly associated with the workplace, mobbing also occurs in schools, families, and peer groups.

Children and teenagers can experience psychological violence in the form of exclusion, ridicule, isolation, or public humiliation.

It is important that we do not downplay the suffering of younger people, because their emotional experiences are just as real as those of adults.
